Travelling by train is a great way of getting around the Netherlands and making the most of your trip. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to get hold of a train ticket before arrival. While Dutch Railways offers plenty of train tickets online, the payment method (iDEAL) is only available for customers with a Dutch bank account. Don’t worry, though – it’s also possible to get your hands on a ticket with a foreign bank account!
Belgian Railways to the Rescue
Are you travelling to or from Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport, Rotterdam or Arnhem? Good news! You can buy your train ticket at Belgian Railways. Unfortunately, Belgian Railways only offers tickets to and from the aforementioned stations. Furthermore, the ticket prices may differ slightly from the prices offered at Dutch Railways. Fortunately, the price differences are very small (€0,10 à €0,20).
Special Offers and Discounts
A lot of Dutch companies regularly offer special deals on train tickets. Examples of (web)shops that regularly offer these bargains are HEMA, Kruidvat or Blokker. While some of the webshops only accept Dutch debit cards, this is not always the case. Sometimes payment with a foreign debit card or with a creditcard is also possible. Holland Travel Ticket & Amsterdam Travel Ticket
Some train tickets are also sold online without iDEAL, like the Holland Travel Ticket and the Amsterdam Travel Ticket. While the Holland Travel Ticket allows you to travel throughout the entire country using train, bus, tram and metro, the Amsterdam Travel Ticket is (as the name suggests) limited to Amsterdam. As these tickets are specifically meant for tourists, it is possible to purchase these online without iDEAL. However, it is not possible to print these tickets yourself. Instead, you are required to pick up these tickets at bookstore AKO at Schiphol Airport.
