The Dutch are known for their love of bikes, but unfortunately not all tourists share the same love. Are you looking for a way to explore Amsterdam, but are your cycling skills not up to par? No problem! The Amsterdam Metro takes you through the entire city in a quick, easy and frequent fashion.

Metro stations to keep in mind

Amsterdam is known for its historical city centre. The Amsterdam metro takes you to the most popular spots. Hop off the metro at Centraal Station and discover the beautiful architecture the city has to offer, like the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, Magna Plaza or one of the many churches. Would you like to stroll around a (flea)market? Then the metrostations Nieuwmarkt and Waterlooplein are definitely worth a visit. From the summer of 2018 onwards, another metrostation in the city centre can be added to the list, namely Rokin.

Practical information on the metro of Amsterdam

In other countries, metro lines often have their very own railway. However, this is not always the case in the Amsterdam metro. In Amsterdam, some metro lines share the same railway. This means that you can often use multiple metro lines to get from point A to point B. For example, if you want to travel between Centraal and Sparleweg, you can choose between metro lines 51, 53 and 54. This means that you never have to wait very long for a metro – one will arrive every few minutes! The same goes for the railway between the Van der Madeweg and Gein: both line 50 and 54 use this railway. Do you want to travel between Amsterdam Zuid and over-Amstel? Then you can use both line 50 and 51.

As you might have already noticed, the names of the metro stations are solely indicated in Dutch. Fortunately, you can easily figure out which metrostation you need to hop on or off at by taking a look at the Amsterdam metro map. What’s more, some Dutch words are very similar to English. For example, ‘centraal station’ means ‘central station’.
